From Russia; We Demand freedom for Azat Miftakhov - Ni postulu liberecon por Azat Miftakhov

Image
Translated into English from an Esperanto language article hosted at Neniammilitointerni .  Since 2019 Azat Miftakhov has been imprisoned by the authorities of the Russian Federation. Azat is a young Mathematician and doctoral student at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, and an Anarchist activist. He was sent to pre-trial detention for two years before being sentenced to a six-year prison term on trumped-up charges based on false testimony acquired through torture.  In fact, one of the two accusers whose testimony alleged that Azat threw a smoke grenade through the window of the office of United Russia, the political party of Putin, was conveniently found to have died before a cross-examination could take place.  A third "witness" is now a refuge in France and in March 2023 wrote to the online journal Mediapart, describing the torture he received by the FSB to secure a denunciation of Azat. Currently, that testimony has not been used against Azat, but it could...

Russia, the mirage of support for the war - Le Monde Diplomatique

Image
Russia, the mirage of support for the war Source article .     Unmanned drones over the Kremlin, evacuation of civilians in the region of Belgorod, an attack on the nationalist writer Zakhar Prilepin: In May, Kyiv intensified its operations on the territory of Russia. Will these symbolic actions really undermine the credibility of the government? Although the effect of the wave of patriotism still exists, criticism of the elites is also increasing and does not only concern opponents of the war... At first glance, the Russian ship of state appears to be weathering the storm the Kremlin unleashed when it invaded its Ukrainian neighbour. More than a year after the start of the war, the country's economy is in recession but has not collapsed (-2.1% in 2022). If we believe the results of opinion polling companies, even those independent of the state(1) 1 , a majority of the population still favours continuing the "special military operation". But the cracks in Russi...

Military drills in Belarus el neniam milito inter ni  Belarusians Fighting for Ukraine: "Lukashenko Putin's Marionet"  Belarus plays a key role in the war in Ukraine. Alexander Lukashenko the ally of Vladimir Putin has allowed the Russian army to pass through his country's territory to invade Ukraine.  In Belarus the violation of human rights is routine.  After the contested re-election of Alexander Lukashenko in August 2020 and the repression that followed there are estimates of over a thousand political prisoners throughout the country.  Many Belarusians left the country and became refugees in Lithuania, Poland or even Ukraine.  Today, several Belarusians have joined the fighting on the side of the Ukrainians. Among them is Gleb, who just celebrated his 18th birthday.  During the mass demonstrations in Belarus in the Autumn of 2020 he was arrested and tortured. He lived in exile in Poland until the start of the war in Ukraine.   That was...

President of the REU supports the war - Prezidanto de REU subtenas la militon

Image
bombing of an apartment block in Borodyanka, north of Kyiv   Earlier I translated a declaration against the war by members of the Russian Esperantist Union condemning the war. I thought it was odd that the current president hadn't signed it and that it wasn't an official statement. But I figured there might be some procedural cause. And that an official condemnation would follow once a vote or whatever was needed had been done. And this declaration was a quick public response to fill the gap, to make their disapproval known in the meantime.  Well, the current president has openly supported the "special operation" and the signatories have been threatened with arrest and the group's online presence has been flooded with patriotic criticism. The full story  https://www.liberafolio.org/2022/03/06/prezidanto-de-reu-subtenas-la-militon/ The criticism was all in Russian, which to me strongly suggest most of the pressure was coming from Russian nationalists. ...

Retired Belarusian Colonel calls on soldiers to defy criminal orders

Image
Video link   Translation: Full Translation : Best of health my dear defenders of the motherland. Making this address to you is a Lieutenant Colonel of the reserves Sahashik Valerij Stepanovich. I’m introducing myself because I’ve quit quite a long time ago. Some of the current airborne forces may not know me, although everyone must have heard about the Black Hawk trials. All the current bravery and mastery has originated from there, and also you must have heard about how the 38th airbourne Briansk brigade used to run 10km and at the end in full personal would swim in a lake all year round, well I’m exactly the guy that for 4 years in a row would run at the front of the brigade and would be the first to jump into the lake. I am the Black Hawk number 1. All of the most important things in life all happen impromptu and unexpectedly. It’s impossible to prepare yourself to be a hero. In the life of every person a situation may suddenly arise in ...
