SUNDAY SCHOOLS THAT TEACH CHILDREN ANARCHY (New York Times, 1910)

Image
Note, transcribed by user  cumming insurrection     A Thousand Young Persons Are Being Trained in New York to Be Successors of Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. So quietly has the anarchistic propaganda been carried on in New York that it will, without doubt, send a chill of arctic iciness down the spines of the many people who profess to stand in holy horror of the theory to learn through this article that to-day anarchistic Sunday schools are in session here just as are Sunday schools for bringing up the young to follow Methodism, Baptism, or any other form of faith or creed. There are easily a thousand children in these schools, children who will, beyond peradventure, grow up to be Alexander Berkmanns and Emma Goldmans, with perhaps a Ferrer or a Tolstoy appearing. They range in age from 6 years to 16. During the week they go to the public schools and sing their own part in the grand chorus of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” recite the lessons offered by the syste...

1917: Emma Goldman, Address to the Jury

9th July, 1917, NYC Gentlemen of the Jury: As in the case of my co-defendant, Alexander Berkman, this is also the first time in my life I have ever addressed a jury. I once had occasion to speak to three judges. On the day after our arrest it was given out by the U.S. Marshal and the District Attorney’s office that the “big fish” of the No?Conscription activities had been caught, and that there would be no more trouble-makers and disturbers to interfere with the highly democratic effort of the Government to conscript its young manhood for the European slaughter. What a pity that the faithful servants of the Government, personified in the U.S. Marshal and the District Attorney, should have used such a weak and flimsy net for their big catch. The moment the anglers pulled their heavily laden net ashore, it broke, and all the labor was so much wasted energy. The methods employed by Marshal McCarthy and his hosts of heroic warriors were sensational enough to satisfy the famous c...

1917: Poster of the Social Revolutionaries

Image
Note translated by Reddit user neopoznanoye_telo Text reads  [Banner]  "In the struggle you will gain your right!"   Long live the revolutionary people! What will we produce during the constituent assembly?     A speedy and lasting peace.     All power to the people.     All land without redemption - to the working people - Land only to those who work on it. No purchase or sale of land.     Shifting taxes from the poor to the rich.     The destruction of the standing army and its replacement by the people's militia.     The struggle for socialism, i.e., the transfer of factories into the hands of the working people    Peasants and workers - who were nothing - will become everything! Comments;  I'm assuming this was produced in 1917 between the February and October revolutions since it opposes the ongoing participation in the First World War and calls for extending the socialist policies dema...

1915: Two Obituaries of Sifo (Shifu)

Image
Shifu's gravestone. Photos courtesy of the Chinese Anarchist Front .   This notice first appeared in the Esperanto language journal La Ondo de Esperanto (The Esperanto Wave) in July 1915 and can be viewed online here .  Shifu was an influential Chinese pioneer of Anarchism. He changed his name on several occasions and was known as Shifu at the end of his life, though in English he's remembered under the name Liu Shifu. He was also an active Esperantist and used the pen name Sifo for Esperanto writings. I translated a short biography of his life earlier, which may help explain some points.  Sifo Shifu (Liu Shifu) the editor of the Esperanto and Chinese language weekly newspaper The Voice of the People, died in Shanghai from tuberculosis. We take some biographical details about Shifu from his publication's 23rd issue. Sifo was born in 1884 in Hongsang* in the province of Canton. He was an extraordinarily talented boy in his youth. At the age of fifteen, he ...

The Great Treason Incident - Anarchism in Japan

Image
From Episode 81 of Isaac Meyer's History of Japan Podcast http://isaacmeyer.net/ In 1910, an anarchist plot to assassinate the Meiji Emperor was uncovered. Seizing the opportunity, conservatives in the government pounced in to arrest 26 anarchists. The background of this confrontation between the government and the radical left, the trials themselves, and their modern legacy are our topics I've become something of a podcast junky thanks to my work schedules, and I've slowly been working my way through Isaac Meyer's History of Japan podcast. Meyer has spent several years in several cities across Japan, has a PHD on the nations history and can speak the language to a degree so he's quite the expert. This episode 81, caught my interest as its about the history of Japan's anarchist movement, an often overlooked subject despite the roots anarchism was able to spread within Japan. In the 1910s-30s Japanese and Korean and Chinese anarchists were a majo...

Nearly two hundred miners died most from asphyxiation. Utah Phillips reads some of the trapped miners letters. First letter Dear wife, this may be the last message you will get from me. The gas broke about 11:15 pm, I tried to get all the men out, but the smoke was too strong. I got some of the boys with me in a drift and put up in a bulkhead. If anything happens to me you better sell the house and go to California and live. You will know your Jim died like a man and his last thoughts were for his wife that I love better than anyone on earth. We’ll meet again, tell mother and the boys goodbye, With love to my wife and may God take care of you. Your loving Jim Jay D Moore Second Letter Dear Pat, well we are waiting for the end, I guess it won’t be long. We take turns rapping ...
